Silence on WhatsApp: Are You Missing a Customer’s Response?

Silence on WhatsApp: Are You Missing a Customer’s Response?

Today is the second day of the National Day holiday. While most people are enjoying their break, I chose to continue working at my desk, developing new clients. Something interesting happened this afternoon, and I wanted to share it with everyone.

Here’s how it all started: I have a new client I’ve been in contact with for a while. We’ve been negotiating through WhatsApp, and the price was more or less finalized. His target price was $6.8, while our initial offer was $7. After some discussions, we agreed on a price of $6.9. He asked me to send an updated quotation to his email so he could proceed and send me a purchase order (PO). I updated the quotation as requested and promptly sent it to his inbox.

However, several days passed, and there was still no response from the client. So, I followed up on WhatsApp, and he quickly replied, saying he would check the email today and get back to me later. But again, a few more days went by, and still, no word. This time, when I messaged him on WhatsApp, it showed that my message remained unread, which made me start to doubt whether he was serious about working with us. Could it be that he found another supplier? Or maybe he no longer needed the product? These doubts started creeping in, and I began contemplating giving up.

For the next week, I didn’t reach out to the client again. With the National Day holiday in full swing and factories closed, I took the opportunity to organize my inbox. Then I noticed something strange—the email with the updated quotation I had sent to the client was still showing as unread. I thought to myself, after all the effort we’ve put in, it would be such a shame if we missed out on this deal simply because the client hadn’t seen the email. So, on a whim, I resent the email.

To my surprise, just minutes after resending the email, the client reached out to me on WhatsApp! He apologized, saying he had just seen the email and had been too busy recently, causing the delay. He then confirmed some details about the packaging and asked me to send him the formal proforma invoice (PI). In less than an hour, we finalized the order.

This experience made me reflect deeply. Sometimes, our thinking can become rigid, and it’s easy to misunderstand the client’s intentions. When they stop responding, many people might choose to give up, but in reality, success often lies just one more step beyond persistence. A little more effort, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
