What is the Most Important Skill in Work and Life?

In Japan, when it comes to job hunting, graduates often start preparing a year in advance. So, in the year leading up to my own graduation, I embarked on the long journey of job searching. I interviewed with various companies, both large and small—from well-known corporations with tens of thousands of employees to startups with just a handful of people. Job hunting in Japan can be quite a tedious process, especially with big corporations, where you go through written tests (in math and Japanese), psychological evaluations, English proficiency exams, group interviews, and several rounds of individual interviews.

In almost every interview, there was a common question asked in the final round: Do you have any questions for us? To which I would usually respond with, What do you think is the most important skill in work?

Surprisingly, the answer was often the same: Communication.

The Importance of Communication

It wasn’t until I had some work experience that I truly understood the depth of what “communication” means.

Communication isn’t simply about passing on information; it consists of two critical components: “connection” and “understanding”. Communication is the medium through which information flows, but it only becomes meaningful when both sides fully understand each other and reach a consensus. Without this, it’s just noise—ineffective and without purpose.

In any organizational structure, communication is inevitable. Whether it’s daily updates or managing large projects, communication is the thread that ties everything together. Poor communication can lead to disastrous outcomes—misunderstandings, wasted time, and costly mistakes.

For instance, if Person A assumes Person B understood their instructions, but in reality, B didn’t, and proceeded with their own interpretation, the result can be a costly rework. This is especially detrimental in smaller businesses, where efficiency and accuracy are key.

Communication in Our Industry

In the garden and outdoor product industry, communication plays an even more vital role, especially when dealing with international clients from Europe and other parts of the world. Our customers are primarily online and offline retailers, as well as local wholesalers with established brands. Ensuring that every product order is understood clearly—from specifications to delivery expectations—is crucial to maintaining trust and long-term relationships.

For a company like ours, where we offer competitive pricing and excellent service, effective communication is the foundation that keeps customers returning. Clear and transparent communication ensures that both sides are aligned, reducing the potential for errors and ensuring smooth operations throughout the supply chain. As we continue to grow, communication remains at the core of our success, allowing us to cater to the unique needs of each client.

Communication in the Age of AI

With the rise of artificial intelligence, communication has taken on a new dimension. It’s no longer just about interactions between people. Increasingly, communication involves machines, which are becoming more human-like in their ability to understand and respond. Ironically, while people may seem to be losing their individuality, machines are becoming more adept at mimicking human understanding.

In many cases, the conversations I have most frequently these days are with machines. By asking the right questions and providing clear inputs, I ensure the machine understands my needs. The result is often a productive and smooth exchange, yielding the answers I seek.

This dynamic highlights a key aspect of effective communication: it’s not just about asking questions; it’s about providing context and ensuring the other party—whether human or machine—fully grasps the situation before offering a solution.

Communicating with Yourself

Communication isn’t just external; it’s also about how we communicate with ourselves. Regular introspection helps us understand our own motivations, strengths, and areas for improvement. By aligning with our own goals, we can work more efficiently, feel more satisfied with our choices, and foster a sense of happiness and well-being. This internal communication creates a positive feedback loop, leading to both personal and professional growth.

As the saying goes, there is only one way to find happiness in life: to live according to your true desires.
